Supreme Court declines plea seeking Salman Khan’s bail cancellation
The prosecutor who was speaking on his arguments asked the justice not to show any leniency to Salman Khan and he requested the judge to provide at least five years of imprisonment.
Public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde and Purnima Kantharia had in their arguments earlier said the actor was drunk at the time of the incident and his breath smelt of alcohol even when he was brought to the hospital for medical check-up the next day.
The Prosecution’s case has been that an inebriated Salman had on intervening the night of September 27-28, 2002, rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser Lexus into the American Express Bakery and laundry at Bandra (west) killing one Nurullah Mehboob Sharif and injuring four others.
The court is expected to issue an order soon. Inebriated driving causes accidents and several human lives are lost.
Challenging the prosecution’s assumption, senior defence counsel Amit Desai stated the “evidence” was riddled with discrepancies.
“The prosecution has presented false witnesses, which is why majority turned slippery at some point in the trial”, he said. “Concluding its arguments, the prosecution said the accused should be convicted for the crime to curb increasing drunken driving cases”. Besides seeking cancellation of Khan’s bail, the petitioner had sought a probe into Patil’s death.
Prosecution in the 2002 hit-and-run case involving Bollywood star Salman Khan on Thursday informed the Bombay High Court that the trail court conviction, handing five-year sentence to the actor was correct and the case was proved beyond any doubt.
