Surgeon General calls youth vaping a public health threat
Matthew Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, noted that based on the available study findings, use of e-cigarette is a serious health concern that demands government action, reported The New York Times.
Dr Murthy’s report says there is not enough evidence that prove e-cigarettes work in this way.
Addiction and mood disorders are among the effects of “nicotine exposure”, the report added while underscoring that nicotine use during pregnancy “can result in multiple adverse consequences, including sudden infant death syndrome”.
“That nicotine can affect the developing brain, and one of the ways that it does that is it really overstimulates your pleasure centers, which can lead you to seeking those sort of same stimulations from other substances”, Karzen said. Nevertheless, many of these new policies will take several years to function adequately. Since e-cigarettes have “far less ingredients”, including no tar, that are “not being burned”, he said, they are “obviously” safer than other tobacco products.
The devices also contain chemical flavorings linked to serious lung disease; benzene, which is found in vehicle exhaust; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead, Murthy’s report said.
The e-cigarette industry was estimated at $4.1 billion by Wells Fargo this year. There was also a claim for health instances to include e-cigarettes in programs at the state and national level in new ruling and restriction. The devices superheat the liquid to create a vapor that users inhale, but in the process harmful compounds are released that can damage the air passages.
“Many e-cigarette companies are using advertising and strategies employed by the traditional cigarette industry, including the use of flavorings, celebrity endorsements, themes such as rebellion and sex, and sponsorship of sports and music events”, Murthy said.
The report notes research showing that young people who use e-cigarettes are more likely to use traditional cigarettes. “However, we have grave concerns about the report’s failure to communicate the unmistakable contribution to increased smoking cessation and the comparative reduced harm presented by vaping products with respect to conventional cigarettes”. Of the more than 22,000 students surveyed, 20 percent had tried e-cigarettes before and 9 percent were current users.
“I have a lot of patients, I have a lot of parents who asked me about e-cigarettes…”
Research released earlier this year by the University College London showed that e-cigarettes may have helped some 18,000 smokers in England kick the tobacco habit last year.
Nicolay says she started using e-cigarettes three years ago because they tasted good.
Hyacinth Empinado/STAT A new rule by the FDA bans sale of e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18.
“For example, the health effects and potentially harmful doses of heated and aerosolized constituents of e-cigarette liquid – including solvents, flavorants, and toxicants – are not completely understood”, he said.
But young people like Foster are the main target of a new warning by U.S. Surgeon General.
