Survivor escaped by playing dead
Obama will travel to Roseburg on Friday to meet with victims’ families one week after a gunman fatally shot nine people on the campus of Umpqua Community College. Recent high school graduates experiencing their fourth day of college. She was face down, her head tucked between her outstretched arms, among dead and dying classmates.
Anastasia Boylan, 18, was shot in the back by the twisted killer Chris Harper-Mercer but survived the ordeal by staying motionless on the floor. The shooter, who owned 13 weapons, six of which were found at the college along with a flak jacket and ammunition, was killed in a shootout with police.
Harper-Mercer opened fire at Umpqua (UHMP’-kwah) Community College in Roseburg, killing nine.
“We felt the immediate area was safe, ” Marlar said.
In 2008, Mercer enlisted in the army, but was discharged just weeks into his training.
His social media profile suggested he was frustrated with organized religion and had studied mass shootings.
Randy Scroggins said the envelope contained a flash drive.
Gunman Christopher Harper-Mercer committed suicide, law enforcement officials have announced.
“We have become numb to this”, Obama said Thursday. “We believe in the Second Amendment”.
“Within two to three minutes, those administrators got up out of their seat, recognizing the severity of the information that they received, and were in the classroom pulling those students out”, Mr. Griffith said at the news conference. Tributes on Facebook described her as “one of the nicest ladies” who was “a kind soul” and “precious”.
Mercer’s father says he’s as shocked as anybody else.
Rand McGowan, who was shot in the hand, told his mother it didn’t seem the shooter was deliberately targeting Christians.
“He’s going to have to learn to walk again”, Earnhardt said.
“My success in Hell is assured”, Harper-Mercer added.
“Hey blonde girl”, he said, according to her grandmother. “What do you want a gun for?”
Like Scroggins, she played dead and Mercer left her there.
The mother of a teenage girl who was among the wounded revealed that the gunman had handed an envelope to one of the male students in the class, whose life the suspect deliberately spared.
The attack ended when police shot the gunman on campus.
One woman tried to show sympathy for the shooter, saying she was sorry for whatever happened to him.
Carmen Nesnick, Harper-Mercer’s step-sister, said he was born in the United Kingdom and travelled to the United States as a young boy.
Scroggins said the community has “come together with strength and courage and compassion”. His parents divorced when he was a teenager and he lived with his mother. Then something warm: “his blood”.
Scroggins daughter also told him Mercer had chosen one student to deliver a message to the authorities.
Roseburg police officers arrived within six minutes of the first call for help.
Lacey Scroggins had thought it was her day to die, she told her father.
Her daughter, in a neighbouring classroom, escaped unhurt.
