Survivor: Killer Shot Wounded People on Ground
“I look over and he shoots the girl next to me”, Colon says.
Medics described how they saw the “full gamete of wounds” after Sunday’s attack that left 49 dead – injuries to the extremities, the abdomen and large soft tissue wounds.
“One came, and another came, and another came”, said Dr. Chadwick Smith. Nine of them were too far gone to be saved, said Dr. Michael Cheatham. And I’m just there laying down, I’m thinking, I’m next. “We need your help, ‘” Smith said.
Angel’s heartbreaking story continues, as he recalls the shooter going into another room inside the club which gave a chance for many people to hide or escape.
Colon was put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital where he says he’s received excellent care. He also discussed the horrifying moments at Pulse when the shooting began. I’m hugging everyone. It was a great night, ‘ Colon recounted. “I tried to get up back up, but everyone started running everywhere”.
He said he was shot three times in the leg and collapsed on the floor.
He got shot three times in the leg. He fell to the ground as he was trying to flee the club and got trampled.
An emotional Jeannette told the newspaper: “I told Angel, I said ‘You’re my Angel because in my mind I was going to get shot”.
As Us Weekly previously reported, police identified the shooter in the tragic incident as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, Florida.
He described the deafening gun battle as police exchanged fire, and said an officer eventually dragged him to safety across a floor of broken glass. Then he was hit again, in the hand and hip, as the gunman shot the injured, apparently “making sure they’re dead”.
Not only did staff rush in, so did supplies from other nearby hospitals.
“The way you guys have taken care of us, its fantastic, if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here”, he said.
“This man held multiple security licenses; he had an armed and an unarmed license”, Henson said.
“Why the law enforcement team was so late – they should have neutralised him quick…This should not have happened”.
She says it’s possible he hid feelings about being gay.
FBI Director James Comey said investigators were looking at the possibility that Mateen had also scouted Disney World as a potential target of the shooting, the Associated Press reported.
They said the injuries suggested that Mateen had used both his rifle and handgun, and fired at some victims from close range.
Colon said that as soon as he heard the gunshots, he and his friends ran. What he didn’t know at the time: The gunman, Omar Mateen, was not finished.
Comey said his agency investigated Mateen twice since 2013 but found insufficient evidence to charge him with a crime.
Then, as the first patients were rushed into surgery, a lull, as the gunman barricaded himself.
Colon was on the floor, surrounded by those bodies, hearing shots all around.
Blocks away, inside the club, as Colon lay wounded, Mateen, returned, shooting the woman beside Colon. Dozens of clubgoers came running through the wall as did the shooter. The gunman died in a shootout with police.
Outside the hospital, the victims’ friends and family bore the torment of unanswered questions.
