Suspect attacks train passengers with knife, fire: Swiss police
Stabbing attack on a train in Switzerland: Media outlets are reporting that a knife-wielding man attacked passengers during a train ride in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
“According to current information a 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid”, the statement said.
The suspect was also injured in the attack, police said.
Meanwhile, dozens of police and emergency personnel have descended upon the Salez train station, which remains closed as of this writing.
Saint Gallen prosecutors have reportedly begun a criminal investigation.
Police – who said the man was armed with “at least one knife” – firefighters, and three rescue helicopters and care teams are at the scene.
The suspected attacker, described as a 27-year-old Swiss man, was also taken to hospital after the incident near Salez, in St Gallen Canton.
European states have been on the alert for ‘lone wolf’ attacks after a series of recent incidents.
There are reports that flammable liquid was used in the horrifying assault.
Details surrounding the incident took place are now unclear, but it comes after Europe has been rocked by a series of terrorist attacks over the past 12 months.
A six-year-old child is said to be among those wounded.
Last September, a heavily armed gunman opened fire on a high-speed Amsterdam-Paris train, but he was overpowered by two young American soldiers and their companion.
Three adults, two teenagers and a child aged six were hurt, according to a police statement.
