Suspect caught in killing of Louisiana deputy

Around the scene, dozens of law enforcement officers set up a perimeter as they hunted for a suspected shooter. Police also said the suspect left his shoes at the scene.

Authorities said 51-one-year-old David Michel (mih-SHELL’) Jr. of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office died Wednesday afternoon.

He said the suspect then ran away into the Pebble Walk neighborhood, Fortunato said.

“He fled after shooting the officer several times”, Fortunato told WVUE-TV.

A witness said the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot at the deputy multiple times including when he was on the ground, Fortunato said.

The officer was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he arrived about 12:45 p.m. Michel was shot several times.

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy who was rushed to the hospital after being shot in Harvey has died, according to sheriff’s spokesman Col. John Fortunato.

Traffic north of LaPalco Boulevard on Manhattan Boulevard was closed as authorities searched for the suspect.
