Suspect, child among 5 killed in fiery family shooting

Five people are dead following a horrific scene in Phoenix early this morning in which police drew gunfire as they tried to rescue people inside a burning home.

The Buckner family moved to Arizona after living in Owasso for several years. James Graham said he wasn’t close to his neighbors, but they chatted occasionally and never mentioned any problems. “And it’s a lot easier for us to put officers in turnouts than convert firefighters into police officers”, said Ardell Deliz of the Phoenix Fire Department.

A shooting in Phoenix on February 23 left five people of the same family dead and now has investigators looking into whether domestic violence played role in the tragedy.

The shooter is believed to have been a son who shot his parents and sisters; a girl between 8 and 12 years of was among those shot.

Crump said Alex Buckner also died in the home.

The name of the suspect wasn’t immediately released by authorities.

At one point, officers were holding the hoses as firefighters struggled to control the fire. Police did say if it is the person who they think it is he was wanted on a felony warrant for a probation violation.

Police say those killed Tuesday morning were all related.

Three firefighters on the roof had to evacuate quickly as conditions worsened.

In a Facebook post, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton praised police, some who had donned fire gear to confront the suspect while responding to the shooting, and other first responders. The younger girl was rushed to the hospital and died a short time later.

– Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting near Interstate 10 and 75th Avenue.

Kaitlin Buckner called 911 shortly before 5am, pleading for help and saying that her brother had shot her, Crump said. Media gathered outside reported hearing gunshots coming from the house as well.

“You have police officers who went into an active fire to pull out people to try to save their lives”, he said.
