Officers initiated life-saving efforts on the man, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
In June 2014, four officers shot and killed Glen Griggs, 53, who ignored officers’ order to drop the long BB gun he was brandishing.
On April 8, Sunnyvale police officer Benjamin Kroutil shot and killed Joseph Jeremy Weber, 28, an Army veteran reportedly dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. Heavily armed officers from multiple agencies provided assistance following the shooting.
A Sunnyvale police officer shot a suspect Thursday afternoon in a commercial area half a mile southeast of Moffett Field. The shooting occurred in the 700 block of San Aleso Avenue, just south of the Mathilda Avenue exit on Highway 101. Responding officers located a vehicle, a black Jaguar XF sedan, matching the description of the one reported to police, Ahearn said.
Sunnyvale Capt. Jeffrey Hunter said at the time that investigators collected several cellphone videos recorded by witnesses, including at least one that reportedly captured the entire encounter, which Hunter said supported the police version of events. She said she saw police arrest one man who appeared not to be resisting. “Once they had him cuffed, he was talking to the officers”. The police shot and killed one suspect in the ensuing chase, but the other fled on foot and has not yet been found. Their identities were not released. One man is dead and the other is still at large.
For about six hours on Saturday, police searched in vain for his companion until about 11 p.m.in the neighborhood.
Officers were looking for a thin black man, about 20 years old, wearing blue jeans and red or orange shirt, Ahearn said. The community organizer, who used “A” as her first name, is with the activist group San Jose Advocates for Empowerment. Two suspects in or near the vehicle ran from officers and officers pursued them behind some buildings across the street from the hotel, he said.
