Suspect Drives Straight into the Ocean During Police Chase
The man had been chased by police through sand dunes north of Perth for nearly two hours having reportedly been spotted driving erratically. Police called off the pursuit once the driver crossed over onto the wrong side of the road and it became unsafe to continue, according to NBC News’ Australian affiliate, Channel 7.
A Perth man has driven his 4WD into the ocean in an effort to avoid police, following a pursuit.
A plane circling overhead managed to capture the failed escape bid.
Officers watched from the beach as the man clambered from his vehicle as it was swamped by waves.
Two officers went into the surge to apprehend him and pulled him from the ocean to make the arrest.
They ended up pulling him out.
The SUV was rapidly overcome with water and the man climbed onto the roof of the floating vehicle.
The vehicle was quickly submerged.
At one point he gets onto the bonnet of the vehicle but is knocked down by a wave.
It was then that he headed for the beach.
