Suspect identified in shooting of good samaritan New Orleans medical student
NOPD identified Euric Cain as the man who they believe shot and attempted to kill a 25-year-old Tulane Med student who stepped in to help a woman who was being robbed on the street.
The next sequence in the video shows Gold lying on the ground with the suspect standing over him and pointing his gun at Gold’s head. That’s when police say the man pointed his gun at Gold and demanded money.
After an argument about money, the gunman fired a shot into Peter Gold’s stomach before trying to kill him. The suspect then took the woman’s purse and fled. The woman is not shown to be injured, according to The Washington Post.
In a statement, Tulane University president Mike Fitts said Mr Gold “was taken to University Medical Centre where he is expected to make a full recovery”. He was wanted on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder in Friday’s shooting of Tulane University medical student Peter Gold.
Police said Cain had landed behind bars earlier this month during a carjacking for possession of a stolen cellphone.
Gold is a fourth-year medical student from Florida whose family has deep ties to Tulane.
We are indebted to the New Orleans Police Department and the U.S. Marshal Service for apprehending the suspect in this case, which has deeply affected the entire Tulane community.
Gold had stopped his auto in an apparent attempt to help the woman that Cain was seemingly assaulting.
Alleged gunman Euric Cain points his weapon at Peter Gold, who clearly has his hands in the air.
Other news reports indicate that the woman did not sustain injuries in the incident. We also ask that everyone continue to respect the Gold family’s need for privacy.
On Friday, officials announced a $12,500 reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest and indictment of Cain. “He was always engaged, involved with his peers and just an wonderful person, so it doesn’t surprise me to hear he was trying to help someone”.
“Peter did his undergraduate work at Tulane, where he was very active at Hillel”, Fitts said in a statement to WGNO News.
