Suspect in Northern Arizona University shooting faces court appearance
A freshman student is in custody in connection with a shooting Friday morning on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff that left one man dead and three others wounded. All the counts were presented in front of the suspect, which is said to have accepted in the court. “There is no indication of self-defence here”, deputy Coconino County attorney Ammon Barker said.
NAU can also use email alerts and emergency broadcast systems to inform the campus community of threats.
Police say the shooting erupted in a confrontation between two student groups. Dispatchers instructed a few callers to stay inside, lock their doors and turn off the lights while advising them help was on the way.
Delta Chi confirmed in a statement to local broadcaster KPNX-TV that frat members were involved in the shooting, but said the incident “had no ties to the chapter”. It’s unclear why the fight started.
The victims, Colin Brough has been identified as killed in the shooting, whereas Nicholas Prato, Nicholas Piring, and Kyle Zientek were the ones who suffered major injuries and was needed to be hospitalized. He said Jones pulled the handgun in a “confrontation” with several students.
Prosecutors said Jones, a pledge from the Sigma Chi fraternity, got into the fight in the parking lot outside the dorm and was punched in the face before being chased to his auto where he kept a pistol. One person opened fire when the guys caught up with him, recovered a gun from his auto and fled, Arizona authorities said. Another photo, from more than two years ago, showed Jones posing with a submachine gun.
Jones fired a shot in the air when others tried to tackle him, and then he dropped the weapon.
The gunman, Jones, has posted pictures of himself with firearms on his Instagram page.
Unlike the attack in Oregon and other mass shootings at colleges and schools in recent years, the two Friday were not so-called active-shooter episodes but instead appeared to stem from ordinary disputes and altercations that quickly turned violent.
The shooting came the day President Barack Obama visited Roseburg, Ore., to console family members of the eight students and teacher who were shot and killed at Umpqua Community College.
The shooting occurred outside a dormitory near the Northern Arizona University campus. “Our hearts are heavy”, she added.
His name and age haven’t been released, however. Flagstaff Medical Center said it couldn’t release any information on the students’ conditions. His bond was set at $2 million.
“He was the happiest person that you probably would ever meet”, Jernegan said.
Brough was from Castle Rock, Colo., about 30 miles south of downtown Denver. Flagstaff is the school’s biggest campus, with more than 20,000 understudies.
