Suspect in officer killing married hours before arrest
The man told police investigators that he recognized McKane as a customer who he sold rims and tires several weeks ago for a black Mitsibushi Galant, the auto that police said the suspect was driving, the affidavit said.
The family of slain San Antonio police officer Benjamin Marconi received condolences from president-elect Donald Trump on Monday night, according to The San Antonio Express News.
Marconi, a 20-year veteran on the force, was ambushed outside police headquarters Sunday evening while writing a traffic ticket inside his squad vehicle. Marconi had pulled over a driver on the south side of the police station. Marconi was shot and killed outside of the Public Safety Building in the 300 block of South Santa Rosa while writing a traffic ticket in his patrol vehicle.
San Antonio police drew a connection with July’s shooting of officers in Dallas, Texas, pointing out that targeted attacks against police were on the rise.
Otis McKane is accused of ambushing San Antonio Police Detective Benjamin Marconi.
Marconi’s family released a statement Monday asking for privacy. Sixty officers have already been shot and killed this year compared to 41 that were killed in 2015. Out of the 60 officers killed, 20 of them were deliberately targeted by their assailants.
On Sunday, in four cities across the country, four police officers were shot; one died, and three others were wounded. “It was any officer he came across”. A suspect in auto is believed to have pulled up next to the officer, fired and fled.
Monday, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said it appears likely that the gunman had no relationship or prior beef with Marconi, and simply made a decision to murder a police officer at the first opportunity. Their relationship to the suspected gunman is unclear. According to the affidavit, the witness reported he believed something was about to happen when he noticed the black vehicle.
“I don’t know why he was in headquarters”.
University President Roy Wilson said: “We have no idea what the motive was in this case – whether it was an ambush or something different”.
