Suspect in Stabbing Says He Was Hearing Voices
The double stabbing of a man and woman in Roanoke is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a possible ISIS-inspired terror attack, according to CBS News.
Police said Sunday that the attack appeared to be random and that Farooqui has no connection to the victims. While officers were at the hospital with the victims, a man identified as Farooqui came into the hospital suffering from injuries of his own.
20-year-old Wasil Farooqui was arrested Saturday for possibly trying to behead a man at a Roanoke apartment complex.
NBC said Farooqui told authorities he heard voices and investigators believed the most likely explanation was that he was mentally disturbed rather than terrorist-inspired.
Wasil Farooqui was accused of wounding a man and woman in an apartment building in Roanoke, Virginia, over the weekend and was charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding.
Witnesses to the attack reported Farooqui shouted “Allahu Akbar” – Arabic for “God is great” – during the incident, indicating the attack may have been religiously motivated. ABC said that in the past year, he traveled to Turkey and may have tried to cross the border into Syria, where the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is recruiting and inspiring sympathizers around the world.
The Feds have had their eye on Farooqui ever since he tried to go to Syria several months ago.
The male victim was able to fight off Farooqui, who fled the scene, according to police.
After his failed attack last Saturday, however, the FBI’s full force is now cracking down on his background. No further details about the investigation have been released.
Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, said in a statement that the agency is involved in the probe.
