Suspected bomb found in Derry was a “viable device”
Three venues that had been due to host PSNI recruitment sessions have been forced to declare security alerts.
However police have said that those events at Omagh’s Strule Arts Centre and Belfast’s Metropolitan College will go ahead today.
Hundreds of students were evacuated from Belfast Metropolitan College at Millfield, near Belfast city centre, and its Titanic Quarter campus.
It is understood schools in the area near the bomb alert in Omagh are telling staff and children to stay inside.
He said: “I was about to check in to the bridal suite and start writing my speech for tomorrow so it was a bit of a shock”.
The Derry recruitment event has been postponed until next Saturday, 17 October, a PSNI spokesperson added.
Guests from England and the United States who were due to due to attend a wedding in Co Donegal on Saturday were evacuated from the Waterfoot Hotel during the alert.
“As part of our recruitment campaign, we are looking for people who want to make a positive contribution to Northern Ireland and are committed to making a difference”.
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff said those behind the alerts have caused “significant disruption”.
Translink has said Omagh bus station was evacuated.
“It is high time they stop these activities and catch up with the rest of society”.
“They need to listen to the voice of the people and end these futile actions immediately”.
“This device had the potential to harm anyone in the area and those involved have shown total disregard for human life”, PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said in a statement after the bomb was found in the grounds of a Londonderry hotel.
“Those who would seek to disrupt the day have shown no thought for others”.
“I would strongly encourage everyone to come along to one of the familiarisation events taking place and find out more about the opportunities that exist within the police service”.
