Suspected ISI spy arrested in Kolkata
Khan was being produced before a vacation bench of Bankshall Court in the city for further police remand.
Kolkata: The documents recovered from suspected ISI agent Akhtar Khan’s home in the city “clearly showed” his links to Pakistan’s ISI, a top Special Task Force (STF) officer said.
Sources said Akhtar Khan has been staying in city’s different areas, particularly eastern part of Tiljala, and had regular contact with an ISI (Pakistans Inter-Services Intelligence) official, identified as Major Arshad Ahmed in Karachi.
According to police reports, one suspect Zafar Khan, who had been detained earlier, was arrested by Kolkata Police’s STF on Monday after long interrogation. Although initially it was believed Zafar was not involved, with inputs acquired from Akhtar, he was called for questioning on Monday and eventually arrested. Before coming to India in 2006, Zafar used live in Pakistan and suspected to having worked with the ISI module there. “These documents, some of them maps, are highly classified”.
The police was also investigating if Khan had gone to Pakistan in the 80s and returned to the city in 2008 after undergoing training.
He has been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code including conspiracy.
STF was conducting searches in and around the city for Khan’s accomplices. “We are trying to locate them”, the officer said. Akhtar (51) was arrested by STF on November 14.
