Suspected Meth Lab Discovered Under Walmart Parking Lot
AMHERST, NY- Police, fire and hazmat crews are at the Walmart on Sheridan and Bailey Monday afternoon.
Shoppers watched as it was reviewed right in the parking lot.
“Who would think there would be a meth lab in a Walmart parking lot”, said another shocked customer.
Captain Scott Chamberlain of the Amherst Police Department said one of his officers was doing routine patrol work when they came across a culvert that led to an area beneath a local Walmart.
An officer discovered a culvert just before 3 p.m. near the Walmart Supercenter in Amherst, WKBW reported.
“Routine patrol, that’s what we do every day”, said Captain Chamberlin. They pulled up buckets of chemicals, spray paint and a liquid, believed to be methamphetamine.
“Checking various areas that people who might be up to no good might be using for no good”.
Some shoppers were anxious that they were being exposed to hazardous chemicals.
Police responded to those concerns, stating that shoppers were not in any danger. All of it was happening in a very busy section; the suspected meth lab was found underneath a Walmart.
Authorities are planning to check surveillance video from the parking lot to see if they can obtain any leads or potential suspects. A resident says the discovery is “unbelievable” for the area. “This isn’t the kind of thing you’d expect in a place like this, that’s the bottom line”.
