SUV that rolled, killed actor was under recall
This past April, certain 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees were recalled by FCA, following a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study that investigated 14 complaints of “rollaway” after intended transmission shifts to the “Park” gear.
Yelchin’s body was found Sunday pinned between the auto and the gate of his home in Studio City, California, after the 27-year-old’s vehicle rolled backward down the steep driveway, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
Star Trek actor, Anton Yelchin, who starred as Chekov in Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the upcoming film Star Trek Beyond, died at the age of 27.
Following the investigation, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), which manufactures the Jeep Grand Cherokee, issued a voluntary recall in April for 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees.
The vehicle that crushed actor Anton Yelchin to death was in need of a fix that led to the recall of over a million cars.
Fiat Chrysler “extends its most honest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Yelchin”, the automaker said in a statement.
Investigators say that his Jeep was left in neutral, rolled down Yelchin’s driveway, and slammed into Yelchin.
It has not been confirmed if Yelchin’s Jeep was one of those recalled or if a problem with the gear shift is what caused his death.

Following an autopsy, coroner’s officials ruled Yelchin’s death an accident and said the cause of death was blunt traumatic asphyxia.
Drivers apparently complained of having trouble telling if they had put the vehicle in park. It sounds a chime if the door is opened while the engine is still running – but will not automatically shut down the ignition.
The rapper and actor Drake, who had a cameo in “Charlie Bartlett”, posted this picture of him and Yelchin to his Instagram. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this hard time.
In just a month, Yelchin will co-star in Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond”, again playing his most famous character, Enterprise officer Pavel Chekov.
There have been a lot of questions about how Yelchin died since he was found early Sunday morning.
