Swansea City: Garry Monk says speculation is driven by ‘agenda’
Garry Monk believes speculation about him being on the brink of losing his job at the Liberty Stadium is driven by an “agenda” from outside the club, and the Swansea City manager insists that he has not been told by Huw Jenkins, the chairman, that his position is under threat.
“For one, we have players who are very good technically, and that have been used to working for three years with me and to suddenly wake up one day and say we are going to change things totally wouldn’t be beneficial”.
After starting the season strongly by accruing eight points from their first four matches of the season, a run which featured a draw at Chelsea and a win at home against Manchester United, Swansea have now only won once in their last eight Premier League matches (D2 L5), and that came against bottom club Aston Villa. I don’t have to be spoken to by anyone to understand my situation, you have to get results, it’s as simple as that.
“He doesn’t have to tell me that we need to pick up results and get back to winning ways – I know that, and what is at stake”. “It’s so wide of the truth”.
“What you learn from management is that results are the be-all and end-all, and if you don’t get them then that obviously creates pressure”. I think they will have a successful season but, similar to ourselves, they’re going through a hard period.
“People are trying to take things out of context and have an agenda behind it”.
“I can only worry about what is said in the walls of Swansea City with my players, staff and the club as a whole”.
Monk confirmed that his French players Bafetimbi Gomis and Franck Tabanou, as well as Ghana striker Andrew Ayew, who was born and has spent most of his career in France, were in the right frame of mind to feature on Saturday following last weekend’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
Monk also dismissed suggestions his assistant Pep Clotet is set to be named as Brentford’s new manager, insisting the Spaniard is committed to Swansea.
“I’m afraid that after our rise over recent years and our continued involvement in the Premier League, I’m convinced there are plenty of people sitting waiting to have their say against us if our performance levels start to drop. I knew it could never last'”.
