Swansea have let Monk down – Curtis
Monk guided Swansea to a best eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last season but lost his job as the Welsh club won only once in 11 games to leave themselves one point above the relegation zone. City have kept seven clean sheets in the eight Premier League games the Belgian has played this season.
But with such dismal results and performances, coupled with the departure of the much beloved Garry Monk, it doesn’t look like the Swans will be much trouble for a Manchester City side who can not afford to take it easy, given their recent run of results, and who will go full throttle to display their prowess in front of their home fans.
“It’s a surprise, but it is the reality at this moment in football – to be sacked, you only need to have a job”, said Mourinho.
Swansea City captain Ashley Williams has suggested that his side let former manager Garry Monk down, following the 36-year-old’s sacking on Wednesday.
City has scored plenty of late goals this season – three came in the final 10 minutes against Borussia Moenchengladbach on Tuesday – and Iheanacho’s was the latest, albeit from a huge deflection. City’s leading striker remains on the sidelines with a heel problem but could be back in training next week. The Ivorian’s City career is yet to take off after absences for worldwide duty, illness and injuries, and struggles for form.
Swansea caretaker boss Alan Curtis says whoever takes over as manager would “be delighted with the team he’s going to inherit” in the wake of their 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.
“It’s been a hard few days for everyone”. We have always brought in a manager to suit our style rather than changing everything and that is what we will be looking to do again. But Garry’s departure seemed a lot more personal to everyone because he has been at the club so long.
But Pellegrini appears to have no concerns, telling reporters ahead of Saturday’s visit of managerless Swansea: “I know that we are qualified in every competition, I know that we are top of the table… or we were top of the table just one game ago”.
Gray’s arrival means Fulham can afford to wait for Monk to finalise his pay-off from Swansea, which could run into the New Year, but they would want assurances he is interested in the Craven Cottage job.
Sky Sports News HQ has reported Swansea are hoping to appoint their new boss early next week and are now drawing up their shortlist.
