SWFL comes together to celebrate MLK Day in Centennial Park
Congress initiated the Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994. Day parade that is among the nation’s biggest celebrations of the holiday. The parade pays tribute to the civil rights leader who fought to bring this country together.
Said another man: “My dream is for the young folks here in this community to reach their full potential, regardless of their economics or their race or whatever it may be”.
“Because if you’re not careful, we’re about to allow a reality show host to bully himself into becoming president of the United States of America”, she said.
Pastor Boyd also says we should reflect on two topics Dr. King often spoke about…peace and love, and to remember that love has no color. “Today is when Dr. Martin Luther King made black and white people be able to sit with each other at restaurants and the same water fountain”, Romerus Sykora said.
“It’s very cold out there, so we want to help people stay warm”, said Say Paw, 18, a member of the National Honor Society at Lowell High School. They wouldn’t understand how and why but we thank God for our grandparents and our forefathers that taught us how to be able to go through the things that we did.
Wright said she has hope for the next generations, who hold the responsibility of continuing Dr. King’s legacy.
This U.S. History AP class is now studying WWII but Mrs. Parkin decided to make this federal holiday a teachable moment.

Volunteers say so much this year has happened, good and bad, that they believe Dr. King would be proud to see. “That we can all be together and that we can celebrate what he wanted to do and also celebrate our futures”.
Many drivers honked and shouted words of appreciation as marchers walked by.
