Swiss extradite detained FIFA official to the United States
Six other officials – Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Eugenio Figueredo, Rafael Esquivel, Jose Maria Marin and Costas Takkas – remain detained in Switzerland and are contesting their extradition.
That official was among those arrested in a dawn raid on a Zurich hotel on May 27, accused of involvement in more than $150 million of bribes given for marketing deals for football tournaments in North and South America.
The BBC and Sky both on Wednesday reported, citing previous information, that the official in question is former CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb and that he could appear in USA court in Brooklyn on Thursday or later this week.
The Swiss Office of Justice said last week the man who agreed to be turned over to US authorities is accused of “accepting bribes totaling millions of dollars in connection with the sale of marketing rights to various sports marketing firms and keeping the money for himself”.
The Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) confirmed that hearings were underway but did not give further details.
He is due to hold an executive meeting to choose a date for the election and then take part in a media conference with Federation Internationale de Football Association general secretary Jerome Valcke on Monday, 20 July. They are wanted on “charges including racketeering, conspiracy and corruption,” Interpol said.
The allegations under investigation by United States and Swiss authorities cover bribery, fraud and money laundering, including possible corruption in the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russian Federation and Qatar respectively.
On Thursday, Transparency worldwide released a report, “Give Back The Game – How to fix FIFA”, which called On outside figures to reform world football’s governing body.
