Sylvester McCoy: The Doctor can’t be a woman
McCoy portrayed the iconic Time Lord from 1987 to 1989 as the seventh regeneration of the character. His incarnation of The Doctor died in 1996 film Doctor Who: The Movie, and the Eighth Doctor was played by Paul McGann.
This debate has been rumbling for the past year, ever since the show’s writer Steven Moffat hinted in 2014 that the role might one day be given to a woman.
“If they changed it to be politically correct then it would ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show”.
The Doctor’s gender has been a contentious subject for a long time and especially since the show was re-booted in 2005.
He told The Daily Mirror: ‘I’m sorry, but no – Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond.
Though Whovians are all pretty happy with the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, on the hit BBC series Doctor Who, before he was announced as Matt Smith’s successor there was plenty of speculation around a female Doctor coming into play.
“A Mr Marple instead of Miss Marple?”
Of course, Sylvester isn’t the first Doctor from the classic series of the show alone to throw his hat into the ring and bring fire to the situation.
He said: ‘But we did just make the female Master, she turns up and the Doctor doesn’t say anything about it, he doesn’t react at all, he thinks that’s perfectly normal.
Do you agree with Sylvester and Peter? You go with whoever you are inspired by, and if there is an actress who would be an excellent female Doctor, why deprive us of that?
