Sylvester Stallone wants Ryan Gosling to be the next Rambo
On paper it sounded good. As a widower with all of life’s trophies behind him, Rocky declines treatment – but you know that decision isn’t going to last.
But there’s an enormously satisfying tilt to these proceedings, which play out like exceedingly well-directed fan fiction even as they add to the “Rocky” canon. It is also the film in which you learn that Rocky has a real name, Robert. Reminiscent to how Rocky V lacked heart, Rocky III had too much heart, if there was such a thing. The killing of Mick was very hard to watch. And speaking of the Italian Stallion’s old trainer, Coogler drops plenty of delightful nods to Meredith’s beloved character (“Women weaken legs” and chicken-chasing, for example). It’s not a knock against him; it’s when he’s harmonising with the past that the film works best. And why were there two championship fights in the same film?
The streets of Philadelphia became a hot tourist destination; to this day people run through the streets climbing the famous stairs with their arms raised as featured in the musical training montage (one of many throughout the series). Knockouts all: Sylvester Stallone brought his three attractive teenage daughters to the Creed premiere showing in L.A. on Thurs. nightThe 69-year-old couldn’t have seemed prouder flanked by his girls, as he wore a pointy navy suit & crisp white button down shirt. It was the sequel that we deserved. But the truth is he might be even better this time around.
While technically the second “Rocky” entry in the new millennium, following the Stallone-directed “Rocky Balboa” in 2006, it’s the first to capture a wholly contemporary feel.
Low budget, down and out, and 1 in a million.
Part sports film, part love story. And just like the barriers that went along to produce this film, Rocky was a surprising success. His story was nothing ever seen before at that time. Despite initial resistance, it’s a given that Rocky will cave and help the kid out, and Stallone is at his near-best as he charmingly walks the line between tired resignation at the encroachment of old age and the inextinguishable desire to get back in the game again. They work as a reminder for the co-writer/director to create something effective and greater than a piece that is simply worthwhile – to make the audience remember how great a story is while at the same time offering up a brand new chapter. Rocky’s marriage with Adrian was heartwarming. My grandmother was not only a teacher, but she also at one time owned a small restaurant, she did hair, and she owned an income tax service. Mick was becoming more of a father figure. And well, Paulie was still just being Pauile. Naturally, those footsteps take him to Philadelphia so he can seek the training of one Rocky Balboa. “Pretty” Ricky Conlan is a bad boy fighter with a rap sheet, but he doesn’t hold a candle to Apollo, Lang or Drago before him.
The film itself could certainly be a contender in other respects.
Despite taking place in the male-dominated world of boxing, “Creed” makes room for the character of Bianca, a struggling musician who, like, Creed overflows with ambition. What really made this film the best in its franchise was his speech at the end. “If I can do it, you can do it”.
“My favorite character in the movie, actually, is Philadelphia”, says actress Tessa Thompson, the movie’s female lead.
