Syracuse Football: Orange fall to LSU 34-24

Fournette continued to lead the offense for LSU on the team’s next drive, rushing up the gut 62 yards for the score, extending the Tigers’ lead to 14 headed into the fourth quarter, 24-10.

LSU was not pushed to its limits against Syracuse, but the Orange stuck around for quite a few time and prevented the Tigers from running away with this game.

Through four weeks of the college football season thus far, there are still a lot of things that we don’t know about a lot of teams and/or specific players. Last week Perkins put up a season-high 219 yards and another score in a 24-23 win over BYU.

After LSU had an 87-yard touchdown run by Fournette called back illegal procedure, the teams traded punts.

Through three games Fournette leads all FBS rushers with 210.3 yards per game, and no other player is within 40 yards of that average. LSU returned it for a touchdown and a 17-3 lead just before the midpoint of the third quarter.

“I think this kid (Fournette) is the most talented tailback we have gone against in my 26 years”.

“I feel like I played OK”, said Mahoney, who started in place of injured freshman Eric Dungey.

Fournette didn’t reach 100 yards rushing until the fifth game of his freshman season a year ago, but he’s now reached that mark in his last five games – including an 11-carry, 143-yard performance in a Music City Bowl loss to Notre Dame to end last season.

“LSU always travels really well, we look forward to hosting those fans up here”, Shafer said. “He’s the same person and he doesn’t change”.

Things looked dire for South Carolina (2-2), which trailed 14-8 and struggled to make critical yards against fired-up UCF (0-4) in the opening half. That was the storyline Saturday, as Syracuse, sitting atop the ACC standings with a 3-0 record, attempted to go 4-0 for the first time since gas was.25 cents.

“I like the effort from our players, but there were too many big plays”, head coach Scott Shafer said. His score came one play after Travin Dural’s 51-yard catch.

Either walk-on sophomore Zack Mahoney or Austin Wilson will likely get the nod at quarterback, although A.J. Long could also see action.

LSU’s trip to Syracuse probably went exactly as we all should have expected on Saturday afternoon: It was sluggish and closer than it should have been, but Leonard Fournette still dominated the game.

The play was reviewed, but it was ruled that neither of Harris’ knees touched the ground before the pitch. The Orange found an answer on its following drive, pulling back within seven with the 40-yard touchdown pass from Mahoney to Estime.

“Excellent athlete”, Little told Syracuse.com “I had a nice chance to visit with him”.

WMU has shot itself in the foot on a couple of occasions – missed field goal, blocked field, very ill-timed penalties – but Jones, and yet another play by an opportunistic defense, has keyed the double-digit first-half lead.
