Syria activists: Warplanes dropped chlorine bombs in Aleppo
An inquiry by the United Nations last month found the Syrian government had used chlorine on at least two occasions. One 29-year-old patient died, according to SAMS. The Observatory’s chief, Rami Abdurrahman, said he could not ascertain whether it was chlorine gas attack.
According to media reports, helicopters dropped barrel bombs loaded with the toxic gas on civilians.
But Russia has blocked the use of those sanctions against the Syrian government, which denies it was responsible.
The Syrian government has denied previous accusations of using chemical weapons during the five-year civil war.
A medical report from the al-Quds hospital in the besieged eastern rebel-held part of Aleppo was shared with journalists via text messages. Volunteer emergency workers said people suffered breathing difficulties after an attack on the Sukari area.
The symptoms of the victims are the same as they have experienced in the past and this led them to believe that this is a chlorine gas attack.
Dozens of Syrian civilians were treated for suspected chlorine-gas poisoning after an alleged government attack on Aleppo’s Al-Sukkari neighborhood on Tuesday, activists and local doctors said. Alhaj added that he “had difficulty breathing and used a mask soaked in salt water to prevent irritation”. Victims were taken to three different hospitals.
In the video, rescuers washed a boy with a hose after he was pulled from the rubble as sirens wail around him.
Initial reports recorded more than 150 casualties suffering chlorine gas inhalation, including many children and women. ‘It is a crowded neighborhood’. If high concentrations of the chemical enter the lungs it can cause death.
A Sukkari resident told AFP a “very strong smell” filled the neighbourhood after it was hit by a barrel bomb and that he and others had difficulty breathing.
The gas attack came three years after the Syrian government agreed to give up its chemical weapons program under a deal brokered by the United States and Russian Federation. Only a week ago, the United Nations published a report in which they determined that the Syrian regime has returned to using chemical weapons despite the agreement signed with the US on the matter.
“The use chemical weapons is a war crime”.
Foreign ministers from the group of countries who have supported the rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad will also attend.
It is estimated that about 300,000 civilians are now trapped in the city.
He continued: “Yesterday evening, a civilian passed away there of suffocation”. These attacks are appalling and must cease.
