Syrian refugee passed through customs despite Trump’s ban
LOS ANGELES Protesters are planning a candlelight vigil at Los Angeles International Airport tonight to oppose President Trump’s executive order temporarily halting immigration from certain Muslim-majority nations. They helped secure the release of two Iraqi refugees, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Haider Alshawi.
How similar was it to Trump’s order? .
At least 109 people were held upon arrival to the U.S. despite holding valid visas. “A lot of bad “dudes” out there!”
The president signed an executive order on Friday that bans indefinitely refugees from Syria from entering the USA and for 90 days immigrants from seven predominately Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya.
What does President Trump say? They’re straight, white people of some means who have decent health insurance and probably won’t be alive long enough to be mortally sickened by the poisonous air and water in a deregulated America. “I don’t see him as a crier”, Trump said at the White House on Monday.
Not on its face: The order doesn’t mention the word Muslims. Unlike Trump’s order, the Obama policy applied only to Iraqi refugees and never specifically prohibited entry.
Trump signed an executive order that would impose sweeping constraints on any new USA regulations, by requiring two rules be killed before any new one can be introduced and mandating zero cost impact.
Trump moved up his plans to reveal his nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat that has been vacant for almost a year, since the death of conservative Antonin Scalia. Obama nominated Merrick Garland for the post, but Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell refused to take up the nomination. European Union officials denounced his immigration order as a risky embrace of isolationism and inequality, while the global aid group Doctors Without Borders accused Trump of keeping people “trapped in war zones, directly endangering their lives”. The two men were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in May 2011 for actions committed in Iraq and trying to assist overseas terrorist groups.
But those stationed at the airport, as well as attorneys challenging the executive order federally with the American Civil Liberties Union, caution that numbers are constantly fluctuating and hard to confirm, as Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security are not cooperating with attorneys by providing official lists of detainees.
Trump is scheduled to speak Sunday with King Salman of Saudi Arabia and with the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. When it led to a man being detained at Kennedy Airport, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill tweeted that it made her “want to throw up”.
There were numerous reports of large delays which caused problems, and hand-wringing in the USA media over the issue.
Since Donald Trump’s election NY has hosted a string of protests against the new president’s agenda – but few anticipated the rally that developed nearly at lightning speed at JFK airport over the weekend.
“To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting”.
He added, though that “accommodations should be made for green card holders and those who’ve assisted the USA armed forces”.
Nadler said he and Velazquez mainly assisted lawyers in dealing with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers so they could get access to the two men. Six Syrians were turned away from Philadelphia International Airport and sent back to Lebanon, a Beirut airport official said.
Those who have already applied for refugee status could still be admitted when the review is completed and under any new procedures that might be implemented.
The order inflicts irreparable damage on the very values that the U.S. prides itself in and seeks to spread. As of Sunday afternoon, one legal permanent resident had been denied entry as a result of the order, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person wasn’t allowed to discuss the matter publicly.
Stephen Miller, a senior adviser to the White House, said: “Nothing in the Brooklyn judge’s order in anyway impedes or prevents the implementation of the president’s executive order which remains in full, complete and total effect”.
In 2015, the former president’s administration identified Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria and later Libya, Somalia and Yemen as countries of concern due to their potential to harbour terrorists.
When the refugee program is reinstated, barring any additional changes to the current directive, the number of refugees who may enter the United States is capped at 50,000 for fiscal year 2017. But that is not the case: All attorneys general who signed the statement were Democrats, suggesting partisan politics rather than an unbiased legal interpretation.
