Syrian refugees receive warm welcome in Canada
The first flight arrived just before midnight carrying 163 refugees who fled the civil war in Syria.
The Prime Minister was clearly savoring the moments at the airport as relieved refugees with wide smiles uttered their thanks to him, with some saying simply, “I’m very happy”. Canada is doing the right thing by providing refuge for those so desperately seeking safety.
BBC reports that the United States administration said it will take in 10,000 refugees over the next year.
There’s a ton of worldwide news coverage today of Canada’s prime minister welcoming Syrian refugees to the country.
“I can’t imagine what you’ve been through, and I really hope you like it here in Canada”, one boy said. A poll that Canada’s CBC News released last month said that not all Canadians are receptive to the new arrivals.
Harjit Sajjan says seeing the children arrive and greet family and other Canadians waiting to welcome them brought back memories.
Canada’s move to welcome Syrian refugees to the country is in sharp contrast to most of the western nations who are reluctant to accept them in their country.
Trudeau is joined by the ministers of immigration, health and defence, as well as Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Toronto Mayor John Tory and the opposition immigration critics.
