Clevelanders were reunited with a familiar face during the segment of local ads during Super Bowl 50 on Sunday.
The fast-food chain is known for its innovative and freaky public relations campaigns, and most recently the chain has played it perfectly coy with its new mystery menu item.
For those who couldn’t wait until the Super Bowl, Taco Bell offered a blind preorder for its biggest fans, revealing the Quesalupa one day early and giving them an opportunity to have a first taste of the new item before the nationwide launch.
Because we live in a world where Taco Bell and the latest Apple product are pretty much equals. Word is the remake was conceived and paid for by Taco Bell, but Treehouse should get a nice little boost out of it.
Nine months later and post-$5-million ad slot, the Quesalupa is being accused of being a ripoff of a taco gobernador (which is a Baja California thing that involves quesadilla or cheese-lined tortilla filled with seafood and salsa). He forgot to mention the nearest Taco Bell to his Lyndale Av. and 26th St. store.
Even with the surprise ruined, I got to Taco Bell at 2 p.m. sharp and brandished my mobile app pre-order, good from 2 to 4 p.m. only. The Quesalupa is a shell stuffed with melted pepper jack cheese and stuffed with seasoned beef, lettuce, cheddar cheese, reduced-fat sour cream and tomatoes.
