Tag Heuer offers glimpse at $1800 Android Wear smartwatch
The long-awaited Android watch has received an official launch date so it is time we presented you with a few details on the Tag Heuer and Intel premium device.
The image you see above may be our first look at the watch (or, more accurately, part of it), but it’s not exactly surprising. So far, it’s looking pretty bad ass.
The Tag Heuer Connected website described the device as “tradition meets innovation, craftsmanship meets savoir-faire, and bold style meets breakthrough technology”.
It adds: “The clock is ticking to the major breakthrough”. This fighting words is based on his claim that only a Swiss-made mechanical watch is worth buying and owning for all eternity.
TAG Heuer isn’t all about prestige and luxury. The Tag Heuer Connected is due to be unveiled officially on November 9th, but we now know how at least a portion of the wearable will look when it hits wrists.
The new smartwatch is supposedly created on the famous Tag Carrera and the watch is expected to cost around $1,800. The TAG CEO said that it would be ridiculous to attempt to go after Apple, which introduced its smartwatch in April 2015. The Rose Gold variation costs up to US$17,000, so the Tag watch is a bargain when compared with that.
To be fair the watch case, the dial, the design, the idea, and the crown will still be Swiss, but still: ,800 for a watch that could well sport the same hardware as other watches running Android Wear that sell for $150 changes the value proposition straight away.
That’s further confirmation that Google’s Android Wear operating system will power the device.
While cheaper Apple Watch models will outsell this product, there will be discriminating people who still favor the bragging rights of owning a Tag Heuer-branded smart watch. That’s quite a bit more than the current record holder, the Huawei Watch that comes in at $799 (about £515).
