TAG Heuer teases you to be ‘connected to eternity’ with its smartwatch
Although they are more accustomed to mechanical, traditional timepieces, Tag Heuer have partnered with Google and Intel to create what they’re calling “the world’s first luxury Android Wear smartwatch”.
Watch division president, Jean-Claude Biver announced the imminent launch of a new wearable that will cost $1,526.
There’s not a great deal to see in the very shadow-heavy photo of the Connected, but it is said to be a more sleek version of the Carrera series of watches. On being asked, “How successful has Apple been at selling Watches?”, Biver said that initially it was claimed 10 to 20 million pieces, but later it was expected to be only 5 million units.
An engraving saying “Tag Heuer Connected” is also etched on the bezel, while other notable features include a singular button on the side likely to be for moving between screens, and a black rubberized strap. However at the bottom of the page that reads “Developed in partnership with Google and Intel”. There’s a countdown timer on Tag Heuer’s website that leads up to the watch’s launch next month. For those with $1800 to spend on an apparently “upgradable” smartwatch, I for one am glad that you might spend your dollars to help progress the smartwatch category and Android Wear platform. The people who snubbed the Apple Watch Edition might eventually settle for Tag Heuer’s cheaper alternative. Tradition meets innovation, craftsmanship meets savoire-faire, and bold style meets breakthrough technology.
TAG Heuer isn’t all about prestige and luxury. These predictions, however, were based on how many Watches Apple might sell by the end of 2015.
Biver says the Apple Watch doesn’t have the staying power of traditional luxury watches – even though the gold models are priced at $17,000.
Tech companies have experimented with different form factors and different materials so that their smartwatches look more appealing to a wider audience and not only to those who appreciate having the latest and greatest gadgets.
