Directed by F Gary Gray, Straight Outta Compton charts the rise of NWA in California in 1988 with the release of their controversial debut album Straight Outta Compton.
Films like “Pitch ideal 2” and “Straight Outta Compton” found audiences from groups that aren’t always represented at the cineplexes – and those films exceeded box office projections.
Generally, these kinds of box office achievements usually happens with “tentpole movies” – like superhero or action flicks – but this is new territory for a hip-hop-based film.
In seventh was the raunchy comedy Vacation, about a family holiday gone awry which stars Ed Helms, Christina Applegate and Chevy Chase, with $5.3 million. But along comes “Straight Outta Compton” and suddenly the box office picture is looking to be all good again.
