ISIL fighters blew up the Roman-era temple of Baal Shamin on Sunday, said Syria’s antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim.

The extremists destroyed the smaller Temple of Baalshamin in the complex last week.

As The Post’s Ishaan Tharoor reported the United Nations’ cultural agency, UNESCO, called the attack on the temple a war crime.

The series of images showed militants placing barrels and small containers, presumably containing explosives, into the temple, as well as similar containers placed on parts of its columns.

Islamic State (IS) militants destroyed Palmyra’s 2,000-year-old Baalshamin temple on Sunday, triggering concern for the fate of one of the world’s richest archaeological sites.
