Before being approached for the 21st season of Dancing With The Stars, Irwin revealed she had never worn heels before.

That turnout led him to teach twice, once at the Maranatha Baptist Church and once to a hastily scheduled assembly in the auditorium of the old Plains High School. Some near the front of the line slept on the church porch, or even in their cars.

They arrived at this sleepy Georgia town in droves, from places as far away as Africa.

“His quality of life should not be impaired at all”.

And on October 1, Carter will turn 91. He underwent his first treatment Thursday afternoon.

“I get my first radiation treatment for the melanoma in my brain this afternoon”, Carter said.

Carter came into the sanctuary with his usual smile and usual wisecracking inquiry about whether there were any visitors.

The liver tumor was removed during surgery at Emory University, where doctors also will use targeted radiation on Carter’s brain tumors and injections of a medication the Food and Drug Administration designated as “breakthrough therapy” and fast-tracked for...

Early this month, Carter announced that advanced cancer had spread from his liver to his brain in the form of melanoma. He will undergo four treatments scheduled at three-week intervals, he said.

Carter spoke briefly about his health before quickly moving on to church lessons.
