A woman in Washington State has died from the measles, marking the nation’s first death from the disease in 12 years.

Health officials in Washington State are warning that measles have been the determined as the source of illness that resulted in the death of a pacific northwest woman.

The woman was taking medications that suppressed her immune system due to other conditions, and this made it very hard for her body to fight another infection. It was effectively too late to do anything, unfortunately.

Although she had previously been vaccinated against measles, the immune suppression allowed her to become infected anyway after she was exposed to the disease at a medical facility.
