The Russian minister of defense announced Wednesday that his country’s military jets have launched their first targeted airstrikes against the Islamic State.
A statement issued by the Joint Operations Command said the countries will “help and cooperate in collecting information about the terrorist Daesh group“, using the Arabic acronym for the IS group.
“The US-led coalition will continue to fly missions over Iraq and Syria as planned and in support of our global mission to degrade and destroy ISIL (Islamic State)”, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said.
Saudi Arabia says the Houthis, Shiites from north Yemen, are puppets of Iran and must be defeated to stop the Islamic Republic from gaining a foothold in the Arabian Peninsula, though Western diplomats have questioned the level of Iranian involvement.
The Russian minister also expressed his conviction that all those fighting against terrorist groups such as ISIL and others ought to coordinate their efforts. The United States believes that their coalition doesn’t need this approval from the UN Security Council.
That military presence in Syria could remain in place even if Mr Assad is eventually supplanted by a new government since Russian Federation would be a part of any transition talks.
