Residents found two metal pieces that might have come from the aircraft that went missing with 54 people on board in Indonesia’s remote Papua province, a military official said Monday.

The first bodies of 54 people killed when a plane went down in eastern Indonesia were Wednesday carried from the remote crash site after bad weather hampered efforts to airlift them.

A Trigana Air pilot spotted the wreckage in the “area that we suspected last night”, Ludi Yanto, head of the Jayapura Search and Rescue Office, said by telephone Monday.

An official says an Indonesian airliner carrying 54 people has lost contact over the country’s easternmost province of Papua.

There was no indication of a distress call from the French-built ATR 42-300twin turboprop plane, the ministry said. No information has been given about whether there were any survivors from the crash.

A search and rescue plane seeking a crashed aircraft with 54 people on board in Indonesia’s Papua province spotted debris believed to be from the missing flight on Monday, the local police chief said.

So far only part of the wing has been found. What happened to the 239 people on that flight remains a mystery.

Heronimus Guru, the deputy operational officer of the National Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters the approximate location of the wreckage is 7 nautical miles southwest from oksibil.

The plane lost contact at about 2:55 p.m., Transportation Ministry spokesman J.A. Barata told CNN Indonesia. The information provided by the local residents said that the flight crashed into Tangok mountain.

The Trigana Air Service plane is at least the third aircraft to go missing in Asia in the the past 18 months.

“Lost contact with plane”, BASARNAS chief Bambang Soelystyo told Reuters by phone.

The Trigana Air flight left the regional capital Jayapura for Oksibil in the south at 14:21 local time (05:21GMT), but lost contact with ground control.

Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (SAR) reported they were informed contact with the plan was lost at 2:55p.m.
