The U.S. had suspended its annual military aid to Egypt soon after President Mohamed Morsi was ousted in a military coup two years ago, but resumed it earlier this year.

A group linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State organisation has claimed it carried out attacks in Egypt’s Sinai region which killed five members of the security forces on Saturday.

Egypt’s military killed 241 militants in the Sinai from July 1-5, including ISIL militants who launched spectacular attacks last week.

Egypt has been fighting a jihadist insurgency in Sinai since the army, then led by Sisi, overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The military spokesman said 21 soldiers and more than 100 militants were killed in the attacks and ensuing clashes, after security officials said dozens more soldiers had been killed.

And in Gaza, militants who support ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula have been staging small attacks against Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The attack took place the day after an unprecedented violence by Islamic State linked extremists in the restive peninsula that undermined government efforts to stem an insurgency in the area a two year crack down.
