Thai police said Wednesday the prime suspect in the bombing of a Bangkok religious shrine in which 20 people died was overheard speaking a foreign language other than English.

The image was apparently based on security camera footage taken from the site of the Erawan Shrine in the minutes before the bomb was detonated.

Meanwhile, the shrine that was the scene of Monday’s deadly attack reopened to the public on Wednesday.

Security services in Thailand have released images of a suspect they are seeking in connection with Monday night’s bombing at a popular shrine in Bangkok that has left at least 20 dead and over 100 injured.

National police chief General Somyot Poompanmoung said the attack was carried out by a “network”. Police released several photos of the man, with and without the backpack, as well as a detailed sketch, and asked the public to provide information about him.

The initial bomb exploded at around 7 p.m. (1200GMT) in Rajprasong, a commercial area of central Bangkok near the Erawan Shrine – a revered Hindu statue visited by thousands of tourists every day.

Police were offering a one million baht (£17,935) reward “to whoever can give information that leads to the arrest of the suspect”.

A Thai motorbike taxi driver who believes he picked up the chief suspect in the bombing of Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine shortly after the blast said the man appeared calm and spoke an unfamiliar language on his cellphone.

The government said Monday evening’s attack at the popular Erawan shrine in the heart of Bangkok was aimed at wrecking the economy, which depends heavily on tourism.

Twenty-two people were killed and 123 injured in yesterday’s blast at the Ratchaprasong intersection.

Mr Chan-ocha described the bomb blast in Bangkok as the worst attack ever on the country that “aimed for innocent lives”.
