In Croatia, 5,000 migrants have arrived in the country since Hungary imposed its crackdown, which included the building of a huge wall created to keep migrants out.

The Hungarian police announced Tuesday that the country has closed its borders to the influx of migrants and refugees attempting to cross into the European Union.

Numerous refugees and migrants are Syrians and Iraqis fleeing war in their homelands.

Ban said at the news conference: “I was shocked to see how these refugees and migrants were treated, it’s not acceptable”.

“We will repair the fence, in fact we will put up a stronger fence“, he said.

“But in the interests of the cohesion of society in the country, we should do everything to significantly reduce the influx of refugees again soon”, he added.

Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said on Tuesday that 277 migrants had so far entered Croatia from Serbia following Hungary’s border closure.

Germany took in 218,000 in the first seven months and, amid last week’s scenes of migrants heading westward on foot from Budapest’s jammed train station, expects as many as 800,000 for the full year.

The new laws make it a criminal offence, punishable by prison or deportation, to damage Hungary’s newly erected border defences.

Some people have attempted to breach the border, even though Hungary’s right-wing government has promised to arrest and deport migrants who enter the country without permission.

Weren’t the Hungarians working to the book when they said genuine refugees were entitled to go into Europe, whilst economic migrants were not?

“The problem here won’t be solved if thousands of people move to Canada or other countries”, said Mohammed Darwish, a mechanical engineer who brought his family from Aleppo to Kilis earlier this year.

Crying children fled the acrid smoke and dozens of people were injured in the chaos.
