Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, where he blasted the global community for embracing the nuclear deal with Iran.
Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu told the General Assembly that Abbas should stop “spreading lies about Israel’s alleged intentions on the Temple Mount”, and return to negotiations to secure peace between the Israeli’s and the Palestinians.
“Israel desires peace with the Palestinians, who continue to spread lies about our policy on the Temple Mount”, Netanyahu said in a statement, using the Jewish name for the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.
He also noted with concerns allegations of excessive use of force against protesters by Palestinian security forces in Bethlehem on Friday, and welcomed the decision by the Palestinian Authority to set up an investigative committee into the conduct of police during this demonstration.
Israeli forces were deployed in large numbers across East Jerusalem’s Palestinian neighbourhoods earlier in the day ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and the Jewish fast of Yom Kippur, both on Wednesday.
New clashes broke out Monday between Palestinians and Israeli police who stormed Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound, as an expected increase in Jewish visitors to the site over the Sukkot holiday boosted tensions.
If Abbas were to go through with his demand that Israel assume responsibility for the Palestinians as the occupying power in the territories, this arguably would require dissolving the Palestinian Authority and Abbas’ resignation. “It is a proud day”.
