The bulk of Netanyahus speech on Thursday focused on his condemnation of the nuclear deal with Iran, but he also took turns at accusing the United Nations of repeatedly bashing his country.

Netanyahu also criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for failing to hold direct peace talks with Israel.

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu told the General Assembly that Abbas should stop “spreading lies about Israel’s alleged intentions on the Temple Mount”, and return to negotiations to secure peace between the Israeli’s and the Palestinians.

“Israel desires peace with the Palestinians, who continue to spread lies about our policy on the Temple Mount”, Netanyahu said in a statement, using the Jewish name for the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

“It is a proud day”, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said.

Earlier this month, the UN General Assembly passed a motion to raise the Palestinian and Vatican flags.

He also noted with concerns allegations of excessive use of force against protesters by Palestinian security forces in Bethlehem on Friday, and welcomed the decision by the Palestinian Authority to set up an investigative committee into the conduct of police during this demonstration.

Israeli forces were deployed in large numbers across East Jerusalem’s Palestinian neighbourhoods earlier in the day ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and the Jewish fast of Yom Kippur, both on Wednesday.
