Hurricane Joaquin remains a Category 4 storm that’s now battering the Bahamas, but the East Coast may dodge one bullet this weekend if the storm keeps to its offshore path, Weather.com and CNN report.

The combination of front stalled across the region, an upper level storm system over the southern us, tropical moisture in place and Hurricane Joaquin well off shore will come together to create periods of very heavy rain from through the weekend.

A hurricane warning was posted for Eleuthera as well as San Salvador, Cat Island and Rum Cay, with the threat of storm surges, coastal flooding and 5-10 inches (13-25 centimeters) of rain, said Geoffrey Greene, a senior forecaster with the Bahamas Meteorology Department.

The National Hurricane Center says Joaquin has a maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, making it an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane.

The “cone of uncertainty” includes those states as well as parts of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Ten to 15 inches of rain could potentially fall over central Bahamas through Friday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, CNN reported, and water levels could possibly rise as high as 3 to 5 feet above normal tides on the Bahamian coasts.

The centre of the storm was about 20 miles north of Samana Cays, Bahamas, and moving west-southwest at 5mph.

Joaquin is the third hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season.

“Confidence in the details of the forecast after 72 hours remains low”, National Hurricane Center said in an update at 5 a.m. Thursday. Its center was about 75 miles southeast of San Salvador Island at 8 a.m. ET, moving at about 5 mph.
