A vaccine for the Ebola virus – the first of its kind in the disease’s 40-year recorded history – shows promise in trials in Guinea, according to a report released Friday in the medical journal Lancet.

Those involved in funding the trial called it a “remarkable” result and said the co-operation between organisations and countries that allowed it to come about augured well for future outbreaks of unsafe viruses.

As of right now, around 28,000 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Libera have been infected with Ebola, and more than 11,000 have died.

The British medical journal Lancet has published early test results and analyses of the findings.
