Determined to rebound from a nagging injury that forced him to withdraw early from Wimbledon, Kei Nishikori advanced to the semifinals of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. with a straight set victory over Sam Groth of Australia.

Second seed Kei Nishikori of Japan captured the Citi Open, defeating towering American eighth seed John Isner 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Sunday’s final and avenging his loss in this year’s Miami Masters quarterfinals.

Having left his mother at the age of 14 to move to the U.S., Nishikori said that he felt his mother’s support in “every way possible”.

The Asian No 1 was eliminated in the quarter finals of the Citi Open last year by Richard Gasquet.

Nishikori won both prior meetings with Mayer at Grand Slams without dropping a set, in the second round at Wimbledon in 2013 and last year in the third round at Flushing Meadows on his way to the final, where he lost to Marin Cilic.

“But It wasn’t like I was blown off the court in a match that I had no chance of winning”.
