Tim Farron declared his door was “wide open” to potential Labour defectors amid warnings Jeremy Corbyn’s party would be “slaughtered” by the Conservatives.
Shadow cabinet minister Chris Bryant was among Labour MPs to dash Mr Farron’s defection hopes yesterday, saying he “wouldn’t jump shop for all the tea in China (and India)”.
After thanking those who voted for him, he said: “I thought at my first PMQs, I would do it in a slightly different way”. This was the debate he had, successfully, in the last election against Corbyn’s predecessor, Ed Miliband.
Writing in the Mail on Sunday, Sir Vince forecast that some Labour supporters – and possibly MPs – would switch to the Lib Dems because of their concerns over the left-wing nature of Mr Corbyn’s politics.

His comments came after another Conservative candidate for mayor, Andrew Boff, said: “I had the absolute tickles when I found out that Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour Party”.
Mr Corbyn also indicated he would not attempt to enforce his personal opposition to the Trident nuclear deterrent or welfare cap. “I’ve long argued to abolish it and put a better alternative in its place, but it was rather refreshing today – good”.
John McDonnell, who was appointed shadow chancellor this week, admitted it was a mistake to say that republicans should be honoured for using armed struggle to force a negotiated settlement.
