Jack McCain, the fourth in his family to graduate from the Naval Academy, said he is less concerned about Trump apologizing to his father, which he has declined to do, than to other prisoners of war and military veterans.

Trump made the controversial comments about McCain and other prisoners of war as he spoke at a question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.

Over the weekend, Trump said that McCain, a Vietnam vet who was captured, tortured and imprisoned for five years, is “not a war hero”.

McCain told MSNBC he has fielded a “flood of calls” from military veterans unhappy with Trump’s remarks. “Somehow to denigrate that in any way is offensive, I think, to most of our veterans”.

McCain told MSNBC this morning that Trump doesn’t need to apologize to him, but should tell veterans he’s sorry.

Warren said while it’s easy to defend McCain as a war hero, the Republican candidates were much more reluctant to go after Trump when he described Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers.

John McCain says Donald Trump doesn’t owe him an apology but should express sorrow to other prisoners of war and their families.

John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam who was the Republican Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, has suggested Trump is appealing to “the crazies”.

In spite of tales of McCain’s harrowing ordeal as a prisoner of war at the “Hanoi Hilton” camp, and widespread outcry in reaction to his words, Trump has refused to back down.

In Vietnam, Galanti was captured and interred for over six years, a time that included a stay at the “Hanoi Hilton”, where McCain had been imprisoned.

Asked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” if Trump should apologize personally to him, McCain said: “I don’t think so”.
