The New York Stock Exchange said a botched technology upgrade, not a hacking attack as some feared, caused Wednesday’s outage that froze one of the world’s biggest equity markets.

After a big down day yesterday following a bloodbath in Chinese stock markets and an outage on the New York Stock Exchange, stocks rebounded Thursday as Chinese stocks jumped nearly 6%.

At this point, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 230 points to 17,546.

The New York Stock Exchange is one of ten stock exchanges around the country. Trading resumed just after 3 p.m. The exchange says there is more information to come.

Stocks closed with sizable losses Wednesday after a technical outage forced the New York Stock Exchange to halt trading for half the day. Trading exchanges have long struggled with technical troubles.
