At least seven people were killed and about 20 others were kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram militants in an overnight raid on a village near Cameroon’s northern border, a senior military officer said on Tuesday.

“During this operation, 178 people held hostage by terrorists were saved, including 101 children, 67 women and 10 men”, he said in a statement.

Nigeria’s army has reported freeing almost 180 hostages held by Boko Haram jihadists in a rescue operation in the war-torn northeast of the country. The military said 67 of those freed were women.

Hundreds have been freed from Boko Haram captivity this year but none of the 219 girls abducted in April 2014 from a school in Chibok were among those rescued.
