Nikkei’s flagship Nihon Keizai Shimbun dominates business and financial news coverage in Japan, assigning multiple reporters to cover each of the country’s biggest companies.

Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 were both about 2.5% lower, while the U.K.’s FTSE 100 was down 1.3%.

Stocks fell across the board on Monday, with 2,247 companies falling, leaving only 77 gainers.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom is advising Japanese media group Nikkei on its £844 ($1.3 billion) purchase of the Financial Times from Britain’s Pearson, which turned to Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for advice.

S&P 500 futures dropped 0.3 percent and Dow futures fell 0.4 percent. Germany’s DAX.GDAXI fell 0.6 percent to 11,534 points and France’s CAC 40.FCHI was down 0.5 percent at 5,079 points.

At this point, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 230 points to 17,546.

Stocks closed with sizable losses Wednesday after a technical outage forced the New York Stock Exchange to halt trading for half the day. Trading exchanges have long struggled with technical troubles.
