Kafando on Friday signed a decree to disband the presidential guard.

“A last chance was given to the former presidential guard and we are giving them yet another chance to surrender to avoid a confrontation”, said Lieutenant Colonel Aziz Ouedraogo, an army spokesman.

On September 16, militaries members of the RSP seized power in Burkina Faso after they rushed in the council of ministers and took hostages the president of transition Michel Kafango, the Prime minister Yacouba Isaac Zida and government members.

Frenchy ambassador Gilles Thibault said on Twitter that President Kafando was freed by coup leaders and was now at the “French residence”.

The transition government equally announced the creation of a commission of inquiry on the coup that left 11 people dead and 271 others injured.

A reporter for VOA in Ouagadougou, Emilie Iob, said the streets of the capital emptied out as word spread that the army was coming.

“We ask them to lay down their arms and go the Sangoule Lamizana camp where they and their families will be safe”, it said, referring to a military barrack west of the capital.
